My Story with Achieve Tahoe

I started working for Achieve Tahoe as an intern during the 2014-2015 winter season. That winter opened my eyes to the world of adaptive sports and the great joy that comes with giving people with all types of physical or cognitive disabilities the chance to ski down the slopes! This year is my seventh winter working for Achieve Tahoe and on a bittersweet note, will be my last as I head off to grad school in August. Over the years, I have seen firsthand how all donations are put to use and the ways in which they open up unlimited possibilities to build health, confidence and independence in people with disabilities. Skiing and the variety of summer sports we offer are simply a vehicle to build life-long skills. All our programs are offered at a significantly reduced rate from the actual cost and from private or group lessons. We also have a scholarship fund to provide these experiences free of cost.

I am also fundraising for the Ability Challenge this year in memory of my Dad. My Dad was my biggest supporter in everything I do at Achieve Tahoe- the first to buy tickets to the fundraising events I planned, the first to donate and in May 2018 he came to stay with me and cooked meals for a week-long military sports camp as his way of giving back. I miss him so much and continue to try to make him proud everyday.

Thanks for your support!

Love,
Camille

Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for Achieve Tahoe.

Achieve Tahoe is a nonprofit that builds health, confidence and independence through recreational sports for children and adults with disabilities. The organization serves over 500 people a year through one-on-one snowsports lessons, waterskiing, paddle sports and more. Achieve Tahoe's highly trained instructors and specialized, adaptive equipment allow the organization to serve just about anyone with any disability. Achieve Tahoe participants and family members often say that their experience with Achieve Tahoe goes on to affect other areas of their life such as gaining confidence to try other sports, becoming more social, and breaking down perceived barriers showing them that they can do things they perhaps never thought they could before.

"We were introduced to Achieve Tahoe by our friend, Mike, five years ago when our daughter, Tate, was 10. Tate has Down syndrome and has skied with your program every season since....We feel so fortunate to have benefited from your fantastic organization. Last week Tate skied with her brothers, Dad and I for the first time without an instructor. While we were on the chairlift she exclaimed, 'I love this...it makes me feel so alive!' Needless to say I had tears running down my cheeks as I took a video of her skiing down [a blue ski run]. Tate loves skiing, has a true sense of pride in her ability and can now independently enjoy what I'm certain will be a lifelong sport. I can say with confidence that I don't think this would have been possible without Achieve Tahoe. Your organization, staff and volunteers have made a real difference in our lives." -Sarah W. 2019
