Riley was born with a spinal cord defect and paralysis. Though he had a love of sports, there were few opportunities to explore and participate. We were fortunate to find Achieve Tahoe when he was just 10 years old, and adaptive skiing quickly became his outlet and way to connect with his body, his environment and even other people. Over the years, he gained confidence and a love for the the sport and the outdoors. He has stayed with the program and now as a young adult, has moved to the area so he could keep connected to the program and his first true love, skiing.
This nonprofit builds health, confidence, and independence through recreational sports for children and adults with disabilities. The organization serves over 600 people a year through one-on-one snow sports lessons, waterskiing, paddle sports, and more. Achieve Tahoe's highly trained instructors and specialized, adaptive equipment allow the organization to serve just about anyone with any disability. Achieve Tahoe participants and family members often say that their experience with Achieve Tahoe goes on to affect other areas of their life such as gaining confidence to try other sports, becoming more social, and breaking down perceived barriers showing them that they can do things they never thought they could before.
