Achieve Tahoe (A.T.) is a nonprofit that builds health, confidence, and independence through recreational sports for children and adults with disabilities. The organization serves over 600 people a year through one-on-one snowsports lessons, waterskiing, paddle sports, and more. A.T.'s highly trained instructors and specialized, adaptive equipment allow the organization to serve just about anyone with any disability. Participants and family members often say that their experience with A.T. goes on to affect other areas of their life such as gaining confidence to try other sports, becoming more social, and breaking down perceived barriers showing them that they can do things they never thought they could before.

For those that don't know about Jody's disability, he has what is called Polymicrogyria (PMG). PMG is a malformation of the brain that causes low-tone throughout his body and cognitive delay. Jody has extreme difficulty with both gross and fine motor skills. He is non-verbal and has difficulty eating solid foods. When he was young we didn't believe that skiing was a possibility for Jody. He wasn't able to properly run and had difficulty walking long distances.

Our family grew up skiing and it's a favorite activity for all of us. We were skeptical but hopeful when we met the team at A.T. and they assured us that Jody could learn how to ski. Now, Jody has been skiing with A.T. for more than 10 years and has become an accomplished skier. This year he skied over the December break and has been a weekend warrior in both January and February, racking up more than 9 days of skiing. He easily carries his own gear, takes the tram and rides chairlifts at the Upper Mountain at Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley). He skies unassisted down all the green lifts at Palisades. He LOVES skiing and the A.T. instructors make the experience fun and easy for our entire family. We are extremely grateful to many volunteer instructors and A.T. staff that have made Jody's and our family's skiing dreams come true.
