Hello! If you are reading this, you know me or someone who knows me and invited you to check this out.... Thank you!

Three years ago I started volunteering with Achieve Tahoe with their Summer Water Sports Program supporting children and young adults with special needs. Last fall, I decided to expand my commitment to Achieve Tahoe and participate in their winter skiing program. Now I can teach at Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley and Northstar!

My passion is working with children with special needs. Simply put, they are amazing. I have observed children on their skis experience sheer joy while sliding over the snow, and their parents experience and express great joy when their special needs child demonstrate behaviors that were deemed "unreachable." That is one of the main reasons this program is so very important. Behaviors that were unreachable are being reached through the balance of mind, body, and spirit through skiing.

Is skiing the miracle of helping special needs children? I'm smiling just to write that question because the miracle of helping children with special needs happens within each of us who participate. I truly feel I can best answer that question through the exclaims of these amazing human beings when they decide to lead me down the hill or when families begin skiing together.

Please join me in financially supporting the Achieve Tahoe program and the families that desire to ski with their children.

Happiness is in your future. Sincerely with joy,

Darla

P.S. If you are interested in Volunteering or getting involved in other ways, email me. We can have coffee together and touch base how to get more involved!

Based in North Lake Tahoe . . . . Achieve Tahoe leads the way in adaptive sports and recreation for people with disabilities. With over 50 years experience, our trained staff and volunteers guide you in discovering life without limits. Our specialized adaptive equipment and teaching methods allow us to accommodate almost ANYone with ANY disability.

Our Mission is to provide affordable inclusive physical and recreational activities that build health and confidence.

Brief History In 1967 Jim Winthers, a World War II Veteran of the 10th Mountain Division and Director of the Soda Springs Ski School, brought together a group of Vietnam Veterans to support each other as they learned to cope with their disabilities. These Veterans taught themselves and others how to ski. From there, our organization was born.

Achieve Tahoe has continued its rehabilitation orientation and remains dedicated to the belief that sports are a vital part of the process in which individuals with disabilities gain self-confidence, mobility, and greater independence. Our programs promote education, socialization and employment. They help turn tragedy into triumph by instilling in participants the knowledge that it's not their disabilities, but their abilities that count.

Family Orientation We encourage the whole family to participate in many of our programs and activities. This can strengthen family bonds while ending the isolation of individuals with disabilities by uniting families through recreational activities.
