While in graduate school for occupational therapy, a young man spoke to our class about how adaptive sports changed his life. A few years prior, he experienced a life changing spinal cord injury and suffered from severed depression following his accident. What touched me most about his story was how significantly his life was changed when he explored adaptive sports. How his outlook turned around, how he got stronger and happier, and how life became meaningful again.
This journey of being a travel OT lead me to Reno, NV. And I somehow managed to be come a ski instructor. Now, I get to volunteer with Achieve Tahoe, and help teach people with disabilities how to ski. Individuals with disabilities, and their families, are no different than typical people, they just have different challenges to face. What I love about Achieve Tahoe is that this organization allows skiing to be an inclusive sport. I selfishly love the fact that I can help fill the mountain with smiles, laughter, and a sense of self-confidence from individuals who are often told what they "can't" do. Achieve Tahoe helps these students learn what they can do.
