Achieve Tahoe is a nonprofit that builds health, confidence and independence through recreational sports for children and adults with disabilities. The organization serves over 500 people a year through one-on-one snowsports lessons, waterskiing, paddle sports and more. Achieve Tahoe's highly trained instructors and specialized, adaptive equipment allow the organization to serve just about anyone with any disability. Achieve Tahoe participants and family members often say that their experience with Achieve Tahoe goes on to affect other areas of their life such as gaining confidence to try other sports, becoming more social, and breaking down perceived barriers showing them that they can do things they perhaps never thought they could before.
"Skiing is pure joy for me. On the mountain, speeding down the hill is where I feel a true sense of calm. I have always planned to share my passion for skiing with my children. However, I wasn't sure how to make this a reality for my son, Anderson. Dropping him off at ski school, not an option. Although he looks like your typical child, he is not. He would need a special instructor, one who had patience for his different learning style, his sudden and unexpected inflexibility and sensory challenges. I was lucky enough to discover Achieve Tahoe, a non profit organization that supports children and adults with different challenges (I guess I am not a big fan of the word disability, because guess what, we all have different strengths and challenges). Anyway, Anderson was able to have a private ski lesson with ski instructors trained to work with children just like him. Fast forward a few months and my little guy is independently skiing down the hill! He is so proud of himself. One of the best things about this accomplishment is that we can now all participate in this activity as a family! Anderson is so thrilled to be putting on his boots and ski's just like Mom and Sophia. Isn't that what we all want, to be included? Achieve Tahoe made that possible for my family.
