Achieve Tahoe is a nonprofit organization that builds health, confidence and independence through recreational sports for people with disabilities. We also have custom programs for our veteran heroes.

Last year, I shared an experience of a boy with Spina Bifida. This year, I'm sharing an advocacy story written by a Mother who admits she may have set the bar too low for her daughter, Miranda. Here are a few excerpts:

AT: "Tell me about your daughter. Can she walk?"
Me: "Yes, but short distances. She has hypotonia, balance issues, and fatigues easily."
AT: "It sounds like you should go snowmobiling. We are not the place for you."
Me: (shocked, what kind of customer service is this!!!) "I don't think you are listening to what I am saying about my daughter."
AT: "If she does the monoski rather than two skis, she will never want to try anything else. You are going to deprive her of something she can do and may enjoy because you don't think she can."
Me: (even more shocked) Speechless

Like Miranda's Mom had doubt, even skepticism, about Miranda's abilities, I felt the same about last year's fundraising effort. I had never before asked friends to financially support a cause. Also, like Miranda's Mom, I am humbled by the outcome.

This year I am inspired both by your support and by Miranda overcoming her challenges to ski. Like Miranda, I believe we will also succeed and reach this year's fundraising goal.
