Achieve Tahoe is a nonprofit that builds health, confidence and independence through recreational sports for children and adults with disabilities. The organization serves over 500 people a year through one-on-one snowsports lessons, waterskiing, paddle sports and more.
Picture if you can, a teenager rolling into our center in his mechanized wheel-chair. He can shift his weight from side to side, but he can't walk. We transfer him into a bi-ski, where this ability to weight shift side to side allows him to put the skis underneath him on edge. Now picture this teenager, unloading the lift with me on his sit ski, and then as a team, we point his ski down hill, where he gets to initiate his first ski turn to the left, then the right and on and on, down the hill, reaching speeds of 20-30mph!! Now imagine the exhilleration this must bring, the sense of freedom, joy, excitement...I've been seeing this experience first hand for the past 9 years as a certified adaptive bi-ski instructor with Achieve Tahoe.
I've volunteered with this amazing organization since 2010 because I've seen first hand the amazing impact it has on it's participants, and honestly, the skiing community at large who sees people with disabilities out in mountains, shredding, whooping and having FUN! Despite a lackluster year of snow, we have put out record breaking numbers of lessons because of our amazing instructors and quite frankly, because of the FUNdraising this organization does to keep lessons and outdoor activities achievable and attainable for those who benefit from the programs. This is where YOU come in friends, family and associates, if you can't give your time, a donation of money keeps these programs happening. These programs happen because I donate my time, now I'm hoping you can donate money to keep these programs happening too.
